Did You Know?

  • The summit houses the remains of the world's largest prehistoric copper mine. Archaeologists have discovered tunnels dating back 4,000 years, proving that humans have been digging holes here since the Bronze Age.
  • It is home to a unique herd of Kashmiri goats, descendants of a pair given to Queen Victoria. These feral residents are famous for their chaotic energy and for invading Llandudno town centre whenever they fancy a change of scenery.
  • The name 'Orme' comes from the Old Norse word for sea serpent. Seen from the sea, the headland supposedly resembles a giant snake emerging from the waves, though you will need a significant amount of imagination to see it today.
  • St Tudno’s Church sits in a hollow near the summit, dating back to the 6th century. It remains a peaceful spot for reflection, provided you do not mind sharing your solitude with the nearby cable car passengers.
  • You can hike to the top via the steep 'Happy Valley,' but be prepared to feel slightly emasculated as you puff uphill. Nothing humbles a serious mountaineer quite like being overtaken by a toddler eating an ice cream while riding the 1902 vintage tramway.
